Doka modernizes the Gogol Theater in Moscow with APG
“APG's Uniline system in combination with DX15
was an ideal choice for several reasons”
Evgeny Kuvarzin, project manager for Doka Center
Doka Gogol Theater

What was formerly the Gogol Theatre in Moscow has been reborn as a modern, multipurpose cultural complex called the Gogol Center.

Moscow's Gogole Theatre re-opens as the Gogol Center

The original building has been completely gutted, stripped back and redesigned to create a breathtakingly modern and modular space that is able to accommodate all types of performing arts. In addition to the large, transformable theatre area, there are numerous smaller spaces and bandstands that can be used for other types of events as well as a café and bookstore. Such a versatile space naturally demanded an extremely versatile sound system. Russian systems integration company Doka Center specified and installed an APG Uniline modular line array system complemented by a number of multipurpose DX15 monitor speakers.

The technical project

According to Doka Center's project manager, Evgeny Kuvarzin, it was the multipurpose nature of the space that dictated the choice of sound system. "While theatre remains an important part of the Gogol Center's repertory, the venue will also be hosting musical programs, concerts, cinema and many other things," explained Evgeny. "We therefore needed a system that is capable of handling all of these types of applications. APG's Uniline system in combination with DX15 was an ideal choice for several reasons; firstly, thanks to its modular design, it can be configured any way you like to handle show of any size. Secondly, the price/quality ratio is exceptional. We have worked with many different line array systems from most of the top manufacturers, but in our opinion, none offers the quality and value for money of APG. Finally, the pure performance of the APG systems is truly remarkable. Our customer is delighted, and we have even had compliments from some of Russia's top sound engineers – they have noted that the sound quality is superb, so that makes us all happy!"

In addition to the Uniline system, the Gogol Center also possesses over 30 DX15 multipurpose monitor speakers. "The DX15s are a really useful complement to the Uniline system," said Evgeny. "The customer uses them as stage monitors, as a surround sound system for cinema and even as a main stand-alone system for smaller events. They can now confidently handle any size and type of event and know that the sound will be great whatever happens."

A new monitoring system for the famous french TV show
This was the perfect opportunity for Julien Martin to participate
in developing the v2 SMX15 presets for the new DMS48 processors
Retours APG Nouvelle Star
With over 1M viewers every Thursday night, "La Nouvelle Star" (the French version of Britain's Pop Idol show), currently hosted on the D8 channel, is a staple of French television. As the final is fast approaching, it's time to take a look at the audio production which, once again, was entrusted to Parisien rental company, Silence !

For this new edition, the stage monitoring system (100% APG) is particularly well thought-out. Designed and managed by Julien Martin, the system combines SMX15s for the leads (be they singers or instruments) and DX15s for the rest. Following in the footsteps of renowned engineer Laurent Midas on the Christophe Mae tour, this was the perfect opportunity for Julien to participate in developing the v2 SMX15 presets for the new DMS48 processors.

Mathieu Delquignies, application support engineer for APG, who worked closely with Julien on the project, explained that, "Settled comfortably for several weeks with lots of sources and great musicians, conditions were ideal for tweaking the monitor presets. For v2, first of all we completely redesigned the filtering, focusing on phase linearity. This gave us extra gain before feedback with even less need for EQ. the aim is for even greater transparency and increased dynamics in order to make the SMX15 the number one "in-ear compatible" wedge on the market."
